Workation in Mallorca
For teams based in Central Europe, Mallorca is the obvious place for a workation: a short flight, the same time zone, reliable internet and mild weather well beyond the summer. This page covers everything you need to plan one, from the right regions and a checklist for work-ready venues to example budgets. Below you will find accommodations and services you can request directly through Retreatly.
What is a team workation?
A workation combines regular work with a stay somewhere else. In a team workation, the whole team or department travels together. You work normal hours, often with focus blocks in the morning, and keep the afternoons or evenings for time together: a strategy workshop on the terrace, dinner at the finca or a hike in the Serra de Tramuntana.
This sets it apart from a classic offsite, which is usually all workshops and no day-to-day work, and from a retreat, which focuses on rest and team building. A workation sits in between: business as usual continues, but in a setting that encourages focus, exchange and cohesion. Many companies use it for distributed teams who otherwise only meet on video calls, or as a mix of a few working days and one or two workshop days.
Typical stays are three to ten nights for groups of six to thirty people. What makes it work is not the pool but a venue where people can genuinely work.
Why Mallorca for a workation?
Mallorca meets the practical needs of a team workation better than most destinations in Europe:
- Short travel time: from most airports in Germany, Austria and Switzerland the flight to Palma takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, with year-round direct flights from many cities.
- Same time zone: Mallorca runs on Central European Time, so meetings with colleagues, clients and partners at home need no time shift.
- Off-season from October to May: outside the peak season venues are easier to book, the island is quieter and temperatures suit both work and outdoor activities.
- Good digital infrastructure: fibre is common in Palma and many towns, mobile coverage is largely 4G with 5G in the cities. For remote fincas, check the internet speed in advance.
- Short distances: most regions are 20 to 60 minutes from the airport, and group transfers are easy to arrange.
- Variety in a small area: city, mountains, coves and the rural interior are close together, so working days and shared experiences combine easily.
The best regions for your workation
The right region depends on whether your team prefers a city or peace and quiet, how close you want to be to the airport and what activities you plan. A quick overview:
Palma and Santa Catalina
The capital offers coworking spaces, cafés, restaurants and the best connections, about 15 minutes from the airport. Santa Catalina is the lively quarter with its market hall and many small venues. Ideal for teams who enjoy city life and evenings out together.
Sóller and the Serra de Tramuntana
The Sóller valley and the mountain villages of the Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offer calm, stone houses and hiking trails on the doorstep. Well suited to strategy days and focused work. Check the venue's internet connection carefully here.
Pollença and Alcúdia
The north combines a historic old town with long beaches and great conditions for cycling and water sports. It is pleasantly quiet in the off-season and offers larger fincas for groups.
Central Mallorca and Sineu
The rural interior around Sineu, Santa Maria and Algaida is central: Palma, the mountains and the coasts are all within easy reach. Many fincas have large grounds and room for whole teams.
South-east and Santanyí
Around Santanyí, Felanitx and the south-eastern coves you will find charming villages, weekly markets and some of the island's most beautiful calas. A good choice when work and rest should carry equal weight.
Llucmajor and Es Trenc
The south between Llucmajor, Campos and the natural beach of Es Trenc is flat, spacious and quick to reach from the airport. Many modern villas and fincas with pools sit here in quiet, secluded spots.
Checklist: what to look for in a workation venue
Not every beautiful villa is good for working. Clarify these points with the venue before booking so your team can work undisturbed on site.
- Internet: Wi-Fi of at least 100 Mbit/s, ideally fibre. Ask about upload speed and whether Wi-Fi covers the whole house and the terrace.
- Workspaces: enough tables and comfortable chairs for everyone working at the same time. A large dining table does not replace a desk for a full working day.
- Meeting room: a room or covered area where the whole team can sit together, ideally with a screen or projector and a flip chart.
- Quiet zones: separate rooms or corners for calls so that not everyone is on the phone in the same room.
- Power: enough sockets at the workspaces, extension leads and a stable supply.
- Climate: heating for the winter months and air conditioning or fans for warm days.
- Catering: ask whether breakfast, catering or a private chef is possible, leaving more time for work and exchange.
- Location: travel time to the airport and the nearest town, parking for hire cars and options for group activities.
What does a workation in Mallorca cost? Example budgets
Costs depend heavily on season, region, group size and amenities. The figures below are rough examples for orientation, not prices from Retreatly or any provider. You receive your actual offer directly from the venue.
| Type of venue | Example per person per night |
|---|---|
| Exclusive-use finca or villa, self-catering | approx. €50 to €120 |
| Upscale villa with meeting room and service | approx. €100 to €200 |
| Boutique hotel or agroturismo with breakfast | approx. €120 to €250 |
| Extra: catering or chef, per person per day | approx. €40 to €90 |
Example figures excluding flights, transfers and activities. In the off-season prices are usually at the lower end of the range.
The best time for a workation
For team workations we recommend October to May. In spring the island is in bloom, in autumn the sea is still warm, and even in winter there are many sunny days warm enough to work on the terrace. Venues are more flexible, flights are often cheaper and places like Palma, Sóller or Pollença are more relaxed than in high summer.
July and August are hot and busy. If you travel then, make sure the workspaces have air conditioning and plan focus time for the mornings. Read more in our article Workation in Mallorca in winter.
Tax and legal in two sentences
For short team workations within the EU, tax and social security questions are usually manageable, but clarify them with HR or a tax adviser beforehand, for example regarding the A1 certificate. Our article Workation and tax: what companies need to know gives an overview.
